The 3rd annual Midwest Queer Trans Indigenous and People of Color Conference starts today!
Registration begins at 4PM in the lower level of the Student Center on the University of Missouri – Columbia campus.
If you need any help getting there or at all, please contact us!
Hello! We have limited space left in our on-campus lodging! It is a very affordable option and conveniently located on campus! Also, we have community lodging if you would prefer to stay with fellow QTIPOC at their homes. Both are great ways to save money as you plan your trip to Columbia, MO.
Please consider both of these options as the conference is only a week away!
On the Shoulders of the Ancestors, Carrying on the Mighty Traditions: We Will Either Find a Way or We Will Make One
We are honored to announce that indigenous and black activist Storme Webber will be delivering the Keynote Speech for the 2017 Midwest Queer Trans Indigenous and People of Color Conference! The keynote will be a meditation on memory, family, ancestors, and the way they made the road by walking.
Through poetry, performance, visual imagery, and music, Storme will explore the multiracial, working-class pre-Stonewall queer culture; she will also reflect on growing up in a lesbian subculture while surviving colonialism, welfare, poverty, and other forms of oppression with the grace of the Ancestors. The keynote will focus on the nature of queer strength, resilience, and survival as well as the power of unity, solidarity and community by placing forgotten narratives and conversations in the foreground once more.
Storme Webber’s Keynote Speech will be given at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 29 (Day 2 of the Conference)!

We want to begin by saying that we are here for all of you. We know that this country was never made for people like us. It has never operated in a way that was in support of us. This is not new – we know it and we’re sure you do as well.
We believe that we need to be in solidarity with each other now more than ever to fight against tyranny, bigotry, and hate. We have to show love for each other and practice self-care and self-love as well as community care and love. We need you to know that you matter. Your life matters. Your mental health, emotions, and physical well-being matter.
We do not blame you for your anger, hurt, tears, or sadness. We would not dare ask or tell you to feel anything different. We will not push hope on you because we understand the feeling of being hopeless. Others may try to gaslight you. It is okay to let them go and cut them off for your own safety. Your survival is resistance in every form.
We encourage you to organize with others if you have the capacity to do so. We encourage you to protest and engage in civil disobedience. We encourage you to support indigenous-owned and POC-owned businesses. We encourage you to donate what you can to pro-POC, pro-wom, pro-LGBTQ, pro-indigenous, pro-Muslim, pro-Jewish, pro-immigrant, and pro-marginalized communities organizations. We encourage you to call out others if you are in a position where you feel safe enough to do so. We encourage you to take up the space you deserve and embrace your identities loudly and proudly. We encourage you to go out for positions of leadership wherever you are able to ensure that your voice is heard.
Do your best to stay safe. Even though we may not know all of you by name, know that we love and care for you. We will continue to work to create a space for you and just for you. If you need anything at all, please do not hesitate to contact us.
